Titanic 3D Sails Into Theatres with the Help of a Local Grad

[PITTSBURGH, PA April 2012] – Originally released in 1997, James Cameron’s Titanic is sailing back into theaters just in time for the 100th anniversary of the ship’s tragic maiden voyage. But this time, audiences will get to experience the epic story in 3D thanks to a team of visual effects artists led by Carrick, PA native Jason Cutler.
A 2008 graduate of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Effects & Motion Graphics, Cutler works for Stereo D, a company that does both 2D and 3D visual effects. When Stereo D was charged with converting Titanic into 3D, Cutler was asked to be the compositing lead on the project. “I was one of the lucky ones to be involved,” said Cutler. “It was a lot of fun, and I had a great time doing it.” Cutler supervised the compositing department, along with a host of other duties. “It was a lot of responsibility,” said Cutler.
Prior to Titanic, he worked on a number of films, including Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Captain America, The Green Hornet and Thor, but according to Cutler, this was his largest and most high-profile project to date. “It takes a lot of energy and time and effort to get it done,” he said. That time and energy included working 100 hour work weeks for 10 months. But, the people and artists he has the opportunity to work with help keep him motivated. “There are some extremely talented people I get to work with on a daily basis,” Cutler said. “That keeps me going.”
